Trouble starting

Today my MonteCarlo would not fire up. On turning the ignition key, there is noise (like the clicking/grinding sound from an electric drill when the torque setting is too low) so power is reaching the starter motor. I’ve tried rocking it in gear but no joy. Any suggestions please?

Thank you for the reply Eric, it turned out to be a failing battery. Replaced with a new one and all is good again. I did try rocking the car in gear and giving the starter a ‘sharp tap’ (memories from my early driving days).

I’m looking forward to the Technical Forum this weekend; hopefully I’ll get a better understanding of “simple fault-finding”.
