Which Oil?

Just a synopsis of a thread I started on the WhatsApp group, I am about to replace the oil in my gearbox and wanted to see what others were using.

From the feedback I learned that:

  1. Redline MT90 seems to be the top pick for many owners.

  2. Tutela ZC90 (80W-90) is the original oil and is still available at a good price from Ricambio Ltd

  3. Others have had good experience with Castrol Transmax Manual 75W90

What you need to be sure about is that the oil you choose is compatible with the brass/bronze synchro components in our transmissions. Oil with the wrong additives causes corrosion of these parts and the end of your gearbox!

This used to be translated to avoiding any oils with an EP rating (Excessive Pressure) needed for bevel gears, however, the thread revealed that some EP oils now claim to be safe for use with Brass components, including Millers Classic Gear Oil EP 80W90 GL4, however we have not had this positively confirmed by anyone, so any comments welcome on that!

I am told on good authority that the capacity of a dry gearbox is 1.8 liters

Hi! There are two 'low points' in the gearbox, although it is one volume of oil. They needed to have a drain plug under the diff and at the bottom of the main casing, as otherwise there would always be 0.5l left in the diff, as there is a high lip between the two parts of the transmission. When you fill it (from the diff side) it flows over into the main casing when the level gets up above a quite low level.
